Playing Grand Theft Auto III with Death

One of the many joys of short-story writing is the fact you have opportunities to experiment. I love cinema and I’ve worked on a dozen or so screenplays, none of which made it to the silver screen. I’ve written some rather awful television programmes. The fact that I did all this in Thailand rather than Hollywood explains why I’m not writing beside my pool.

I wondered wether I’d be able to write a story that was all dialogue – not a trace of description, direction of narrative. It would be rather like attempting to understand a DVD with the picture off. The challenge was to make the dialogues credible and avoid sentences like; “That’s Alan, the Wleshman of forty who seduced your mother and stole all her furniture, at the front door.” I had to work through a number of permutations before I got it right. Al least I think I got it right.

Movie buffs out there would have spotted the shameless looting from Bergman. I’d wondered how the knight and Death might have haggled in the 21st century without a chess board. Grand Theft Auto III seemed like an appropriate arena. It’s one if the many violent games currently numbing our young people to the atrocity of murder. Why not massacre a few dozen innocent bystanders before breakfast? I know death would be a great fan.
